Chapter 8-Boredom maneuver A-739

“Psstt! Kinya!” Emma whispered as the two girls walked through the halls that afternoon. “What?” “Hi.” They stopped moving. “Why are we whispering?” asked Kinya.
I don’t know. Let’s stop.” “Okay. Can I come over to your house tonight?” “Sure. Oh wait, Peter’s gonna be there too, is that okay?” “Yep.” They sat in the grass and looked at the clouds waiting for Peter to join them. All three bells rang before Peter finally rushed through the doors of their school. "What took you so long Peter? Let's go!" "Sorry, I-" Emma grabbed his arm before he could finish his reply and the way towards her house. They walked past penny’s pizza twice before Emma remembered to take a right-turn at the park. When they finally got to her house, their jack-o-lanterns’ eyes followed them inside. “No offense Emma, but that thing’s kind of creepy.” Said Kinya. “Yeah, I know, but dad really likes it, he wouldn’t take it down until Halloween is over, or if he sees a flying pig. Of course, he might take it down tomorrow…” “Because it’s Halloween?” “No, it’s just … I’ve heard rumors about some really weird pigs a few miles south of here…” "Of course you did." Kinya as Peter tried hard not to laugh. “What! I did.” Peter’s response was drowned out by Kaylie and her dad’s yells from inside a closet in the living room. Emma slipped over to the door to listen. Kinya and Peter followed. “ …. She’s better behaved”“Why? shouted Kaylie. “I told you you can bring her, but you have to take the other four too!” "Why? I mean Katie and Kinya are okay, but Emma and Peter?!” “You have to! You’re lucky no to have the younger kids, I’m taking them!” “Fine! Fine! But if they do anything, ANYTHING, stupid you are raising my allowance!” “They’re walking to the door! Whispered Emma. “Quick, boredom maneuver A-739!” Emma and "I’m taking you three and Katie trick-or-treating tomorrow and if you do anything stupid, I get an allowance raise. Oh yeah, and I’m also bringing Lesley.” “What?!”

Chapter 7-The boring chapter of no name part 2

When Kinya walked into the flying room with the rest of their class, she was not surprised by what their teacher Ms. Kamis looked like. She was the woman Kinya had seen in the hallway the day before. “I see we have a new student.” Said Ms. Kamis. “Emma, please help Kinya. She probably doesn’t know how to fly yet. Now everyone, today I want you to work on the double back flip. We’ve been doing it for two weeks, and Lesley’s the only one who’s mastered it. So that means you’re not going to leave until it’s time to go, and you’ve done the double back flip. I don’t care if I have to keep you here all night, as long as you do it. Understand? “Yes Ms. Kamis.” The whole class said in unison. “Good. You will begin … now!” Lesley instantly leaped into the air and did one …… two… three… four backflips before landing perfectly on the classroom floor. “Perfect as usual Lesley, although I specifically said double backflip, I’m glad you can do more because it seems like some people can’t even do less.” She glared at the class. “Get to work!” Emma quickly taught Kinya how to fly, and the two girls spent the first few minutes of class almost flying into the first backflip before falling back onto the floor again. “I think we should take a small break.” Said Emma. The new best friends sat down side-by-side and talked. “how did Ms. Kamis know my name?” “Telepathy. She knows people’s names before they tell her. Pretty boring power.” They sat in silence for a few moments before Kinya asked another question. “Why is the floor covered with pillows?” “So that if someone falls they won’t get hurt. Doesn’t really make sense since we all know the standard healing spell.” Then, realizing Kinya didn’t, she added, “Iltebo.” The next two minutes were spent in silence. (Except for the background noise of people talking and falling on the cushioned floor.) Finally the two girls stood up and continued zooming around pointlessly. Emma managed to do a double backflip right before the bell rang. “Well it seems Kinya is the only one who didn’t complete the assignment. I suppose that means she’ll just have to stay here until she does.” “I’ll stay here too!” Volunteered Emma. “No. You did the double backflip, which means you’ll be going to Aglay with the rest of your class.” “What’s Aglay?” Whispered Kinya as Emma left. “Moving objects. Sorry, can’t talk now. Bye!” Five minutes later, Kinya stumbled out of the second backflip and two minutes after that she was stumbling through the door of the aglay classroom. “Finally! I thought you would never come. You’ve ruined your chance at being good at aglay, you know. Not that you ever had a chance, of course.” “Lesley, if you don’t shut up I’ll—“ “What? Fudgeificate me? Ha! You can’t even do that. Aglay is the hardest magical subject ever. I’m the only one in here who can do it. Except Ms. Milly of course.” She glanced at the teacher. “If you’re hoping to be good at this, you’re pushing your luck way past its breaking point.”

“WILL YOU CUT IT OUT!!!!” shouted Kinya as she thrust her arms forward. A folding chair in the corner of the room zoomed at Lesley, who screamed as she leapt out of the way. “What in the world did you do that for! You could of...”Lesley screamed, drawing all the attention back to her. After that Ms. Milly decided that they should just sit on the floor and copy down the names of famous people in the subject of aglay. Finally, they walked down the hall toward underwater class. Behind that class's plain boring door was a plain boring classroom. “Good afternoon class. Hello Kinya, I’ve heard of you. My name is Ms. Senfield. I hope you like it here. Anyways class, follow me.” She led them out a door in the corner of the room to a fenced in lake. “Okay everybody, today we’re going to pick waterweed. We’re running low on our stock of it. Please remember that the under-water-breathing spell is Arsbintul. Also remember that it only last for 15 minutes. Please come up then with your waterweed. Okay, now line up. Go!” everyone took turns saying the spell and jumping into the lake. Out of all the classes that Kinya had seen so far, this seemed to be the only that Lesley was bad at. She mumbled the spell much less enthusiasm than usual. When Kinya said the spell, she felt more confident that she had ever been, or would be in her life. This was most completely and definitely, NOT something Lesley could tease her about. The water felt cool and smooth on Kinya’s skin, instead of freezing cold like it should have been, since it was the middle of October. Kinya spotted Emma swimming around without a care in the world. She tried to call out to her, but the only things that left her mouth were a few bubbles. Emma noticed her new best friend and signaled for them to swim to the surface. When she reached air, Kinya surprised herself by taking a deep breath. “Emma, I can breathe up here! My spell isn’t wearing off is it?” “Of course not! You see, the under-water-breathing spell adds gills, but DOES NOT take away lungs. The human body doesn’t work like that because if you take away your lungs, well, your whole blood system would collapse.” “Meaning?” “Meaning you would basically die.” Kinya was stunned. She had never heard Emma sound so professional and, well, normal. On second thought, maybe not normal. “Listen, I have an idea. I’ll dive down to the bottom of the lake and show you what waterweed looks like, then you’ll be able to collect some.” She got ready for the dive but was stopped by the sound of Kinya’s voice. “Wait! How will I know when the under-water-breathing spell is wearing off?” “You’ll just know,” said Emma firmly. “Now follow me!” she dived smoothly back under the beautiful clear waves. It was obvious that Emma fit in down there like a key fits into a lock. When Kinya got down to the bottom of the lake, she stared out at an underwater field of what looked like seaweed. Emma smiled and swam off to pick waterweed somewhere else. Kinya pulled at least twenty of these strange blue plants our of the lake’s rocky ground before deciding that she wouldn’t be able to hold any more. She gazed at some of the fish passing by. One of the strangest ones was the one with a red ball on his nose, a rainbow colored suit, and puffy orange hair under a silly little hat. A clown fish, obviously. Suddenly she realized something very important. Her gills were starting to close! The spell was wearing off! She started to swim toward the surface. Five seconds left until her gills were gone. Swim, swim … four seconds ….. faster Kinya faster … three … why won’t my legs kick harder … two … I’m going to drown! Two feet left to the surface … one. Kinya felt the arms of her new best friend pull her out of the water. She never realized how great it felt to breathe.

WHILE YOU'RE WAITING FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER OF THE BOOK...

Once, in the old shed by the river bank, there lived a family 4 black cats and one tabby cat. The black cats were mother and father cat and their sons, Matt and Nat, and then, of course, their other son Freddy the tabby.

But there were more differences between Freddy and his family than just their fur color. For example, Freddy was the only one who disagreed with his father during their kitty-schooling lessons. He was also the only one to take his bath in the river instead of using the tongue-fur technique like most cats do. Matt and Nat were friends with each other not with Freddy. When they thought he wasn’t listening they laughed and said mean things about him. Freddy heard, and felt lonely. He was an outcast from his family (except for his mom, because mothers always love all of their children) and his father was overjoyed when it was time to get rid of him. One thing that bugged him about Freddy was that Freddy love mice. Every mouse that came by the shed would become Freddy’s friend. Father cat was a normal cat in every way so he hated mice like any normal cat should. The mice were just another reason that Freddy had to go.

When it was time for Matt, Nat and Freddy to finish their kitty schooling and leave their parents and their shed by the riverbank to become real cats with real cat jobs, father cat gathered all his kitty-sons up to say goodbye.

“Matt, Nat, my 2 good little kitty-sons, what are you going to do now that you’re leaving your family and your home by the river bank?” said father cat. Matt and Nat, who liked to live the basic cat lifestyle, answered “we are going to become mousers, the best one ever!” “Good kitties” said father cat before giving them not a small kitty hug, but a big cat hug, to send them on their way.

Father cat turned his head to face Freddy and said “now you, my bad little kitty-son, what are you going to do now that you’re finally leaving us?”

Freddy took a deep breath before answering. “I’m not sure. I think I’ll just look around for the right job.”

“I give you my luck” said father cat before sending him off with nothing more than a cold glare to remember him by.

Matt and Nat worked for months at a cheese factory as mousers, keeping the mice from taking the cheese. They had very little success because the mice were so quick and smart. They caught only small, scrawny mice and earned very little food from cheese factory owners. They were beginning to lose hope when they spotted a big, slow, frightened mouse trying to sneak by a cheese pile. Matt and Nat caught him easily and were praised and rewarded by the owners.

The mice, however, were not very happy about losing their leader to the cats. Panicking, they held a meeting.

“What will we do?!” squeaked one mouse.

“He was the oldest and wisest of our colony! We’ll never survive without him!” squeaked another.

“I have an idea!” squeaked the third. “Let’s go find our old friend Freddy.”

The mice all thought that that was a good idea so they went into town to look for Freddy. They found him looking around for some sort of cat-job he could do, now that he was a cat.

“Freddy, Freddy!” They squeaked. “Your brothers have eaten our leader! He was the wisest of the mice! We’ll all be eaten up in a second if we stay at the cheese factory without him! What should we do? We need a new home!”

Freddy smiled. “This is great! We can live together. And I know the perfect place.”

So Freddy and the mice walked along the riverbank until they came to a shed, a lot like Freddy’s old one, only bigger and beautiful. Inside was a big room where Freddy would live and all around it were mouse holds, enough so that every little mouse family had a place to sleep. They were all very happy to live with Freddy, and Freddy was very happy to live with them, so they all lived happily ever after.

But the story isn’t over yet.

When all the mice left, the cheese factory owner decided they didn’t need matt and Nat anymore so they kicked them out. Matt and Nat searched for weeks for a new cat-job, but they were all taken. They had nowhere to sleep, even on cold, rainy nights. One night it was raining so hard that the only thing wetter than the rain was the river, and the only place Matt and Nat could find to keep dry was under a very big leaf.

On that same night, Freddy and the mice were sitting in big blue armchairs next to a big warm fire in their shed. They were all laughing and having a good time when there was a knock at the door. Freddy opened it, and there was Matt and Nat.

“When all the mice left we were kicked out of the cheese factory” said Matt.

“Can we stay here?” asked Nat.

Freddy answered. “Of course you can stay here! But I must warn you, the mice live here too, so no matter how much you hate mice, you must be nice to them. When you are nice to mice and give them homes they are nice to you and tell you jokes and give you cheese. But when you are mean to mice, they leave cheese factories and get you fired. It’s much better to be nice to mice and give them homes,” said Freddy. “That is why I have become a mouse real estate agent.”

Chapter 6-The boring chapter of no name part 1

Kinya walked to school alone the next day. She needed time to think about what Emma had told her the night before. The reason she hadn’t seen Emma’s mom was that she was never there. Ever. Two months ago, Emma, her mom, her dad, Kaylie, Katie, Tom, John, Paul, Will and Thing went to the ocean for vacation. They cast the under-water-breathing spell to go swimming. It was sundown when they got out of the water. All but Emma’s mom. All nine of them waited for her, Will and Thing not understanding the situation. After an hour of staring at the moonlit sea, they gave up and went back to their hotel. The rest of their vacation was spent searching for their mom. When they finally went home, they had an idea of what had happened. Her under-water-breathing spell had worn off and she had been too far away from the surface to re-cast the spell. Kinya had been thinking about it all night, and after a while she had realized that nothing ever seems to really bother Emma. Anyways, when she got to school Kinya reviewed fudgification with her class, ate lunch, then came back for the afternoon lessons. When everyone was seated, Ms. Shooley assigned the afternoon line-leaders. “ Okay, Milly, you lead the class to M.a.i.d. Lesley, you do flying, Kevin for Aglay, then… How about Emma for underwater. Got it?” Emma and Lesley glared at each other as they answered “ Yes, Ms. Shooley.” As Milly led the class down the hall, Kinya whispered to Emma “ What does M.a.i.d. stand for?” “ M.a.i.d. stands for magical animal I.D.” Emma answered. Milly led the class through a stiff wooden door at the end of the crowded hallway. Inside there five rows of desks and exactly forty-six shelves that were completely covered with glass tanks of all different shapes and sizes. Inside the tanks were large hairy spiders, twelve fearful chipmunks, mischievous multicolored cats, a single watchful phoenix, and several tanks that appeared empty. On every bit off empty wall there were posters featuring any magical creature that couldn’t fit in one of the tanks. Everyone sat down at his or her desks to hear what their teacher, Mrs. Reen, had to say. “Today we’ll be learning about three different types of magical creatures.” And with saying that, Mrs. Reen put her hand in the tank nearest to her and scooped out a chipmunk, which lay huddled in her hand. “This is the chipmunk. It cannot fly, breath fire, talk, hypnotize other creatures, breathe underwater, cure disease, or produce a potion. It has none of the 5,362 magical abilities known to humans. I guess what I’m trying to say is that chipmunks are so not magical that they’re magical.” The end of Mrs. Reen’s speech was greeted by an unusual silence, which was short-lived. She cleared her throat before continuing “The next animal that I’m going to show you is one that… Well, doesn’t exist. At least not as you know it as.” Which, unsurprisingly, brought back most of the whispering. “This is even weirder than homeroom.” Kinya whispered. “I wonder what she’s going to show us next?” Her question was quickly answered as Mrs. Reen walked back to the front of the room carrying a spider in her hand. “ As I hope you know, the spider is supposed to be an arachnid. Now here’s something you probably don’t know: there is no such thing as a spider. But there is a bug and there is a gub. A bug has six legs and a gub has five. There is a certain kind of bug that has four legs on one side and two on the other and there is a gub that has four legs on one side and one on the other. When a bug and a gub mate the sides with one and two legs blend together and leave only the four-legged sides showing, which gives the illusion that it is an eight-legged creature that you know as a spider. Any questions?” Kinya raised her hand. “Yes Kinya?” “ Well I was just wondering why a spider isn’t an animal just because it has two parts.” “Well the bug is an animal and a gub is an animal but together as a spider they are two animals, meaning that one spider would have to be called a spiders, which doesn’t make sense because the plural is in the place of the singular, which also makes no sense because this is a school of magic not grammar. Understand?” “No. Anyways, my other question is how is a spider magical?” Mrs. Reen took a deep breath, making Kinya and the rest of the class prepare themselves for her usual long boring speech. “A gub is magical.” She said simply, letting out her breath. “Okay, no more questions, good.” Mrs. Reen said, completely ignoring Kinya’s hand. “We don’t have a lot of time left for class, so let’s take a quick look at our last animal for today.” Mrs. Reen walked over to one of the shelves in the back of the room and picked up one of the tanks that seemed to be empty. She also picked up a microscope that was sitting next to it. Mrs. Reen walked back to the front of the room and set the two objects down on her desk. “Everyone line up!” She said. A line formed in front of Mrs. Reen’s desk in barely 5 seconds. Emma, who was first in line, looked into the box through the microscope. “I can’t believe it! 2+2! When in doubt, say something random.” “Emma, you are weird.” Said the next person in line. ‘Wow! Those things are teeny-tiny.” He said. Each reaction raised Kinya’s curiosity further and further until, finally, it was her turn. She peered into the tank through the microscope. What she saw was most definitely magical. Flying around in the tank were millions of microscopic elephants. Pink elephants, by the way. With wings. “Wow.” Kinya said. The last two people took their turns, and then Lesley led them all too flying class.

Chapter 5 - At Emma’s House

After school, Emma, Kinya, Peter and Lesley went to the school library. There were only a few other kids inside. “come on Kinya, I’ll show you the spells section,” said Emma. “it should have some books on fudgeification.” They explored the shelves of the library until they had each decided on a few books. Kinya got two books: Guide to Fudgeification and it’s Uses and The Founder of the Fudge. Emma got two books about fudgeification and another one called Magical Objects. They all checked out their books then left the library.
“You’re pretty quiet Emma,” said Kinya. “yeah, I guess,” answered Emma.
When they got to the curb Emma said “do you want to come to my house tonight Kinya?” “sure, I guess. But I’ll have to tell my parents first.” “you can call them when we get there.”
“are you an all magic family?” Kinya asked suddenly.
Emma thought about it a bit as Peter and Lesley left them to go to their homes. Finally she answered. “I guess so.”
“well, then why would you have a phone?” “Kinya, you read Harry Potter too much.”
“what do you mean?”
“we live on Earth. We have a phone.”
“oh.” They walked for a few more minutes before arriving at Emma’s house. It was like any other house except for the fact that the jack-o-lantern on their front step was blinking. The two girls walked up to the front door. Emma pulled a ring of keys out of her coat pocket. On it were six keys and a smiley face keychain. “all the keys are useless,” she said. “but the keychain unlocks anything with a keyhole. My dad took the magic out of the actual keys. He used magic scissors.”
“keys are magical?” Kinya wondered out loud.
“of course they are. Only magic can unlock things,” she opened the door and they walked inside. “finally you’re here! Dad told me to watch you, but I have homework I would ask Katie to watch you but she’s going to Susie’s house again, so that means you and your friend are watching Will, Thessakanula and the triplets.” Kinya stared at the owner of the voice. She looked exactly like her! The only differences were that she was older and was wearing glasses. Both of them somehow managed to get their amazingly short black hair into a ponytail every morning.
“Kaylie, her name isn’t Thessakanula, it’s Thing.”
“So what? Dad calls her by her real name so why can’t I?”
“Because you’re not even a grownup!”
“Hah! You wish! I’m seventeen years old now so in your face!”
“Actually, you’re not really a grown up until you’re eighteen.” Kinya pointed out.
“Same difference! I’m only a few months away being an official adult.”
“Oh yeah, well—“ Emma started to say before a new voice cut in. “bye everyone, I’m going to susie’s house now!”
“Bye Katie” Emma said cheerfully as if the fight with Kaylie had never happened. Katie was barely ever in the house after school. But somehow she easily managed to finish all the homework she got as an eleven-year-old. When she was gone, five younger children ran into the room. Emma pointed each one out as they ran by. “that one’s name is Tom.” She pointed at a small four year old boy. “there’s Joun.” She pointed at Tom’s identical brother. “and that one’s Paul.” She finished by pointing at a boy who looked exactly the same as the other two. “at least, I think that’s the order. Oh, and that two year old pulling the wagon is Thing.”
“Thing isn’t her real name is it?” asked Kinya as Kaylie left the room. “Thing, nickname!” Thing said.” “Real name” she giggled. “Theassakoola!”
“yeah, dad and Kaylie are the only ones who call her Thessakanula.”
“OK so Mr. Nemrok and Kaylie don’t call her Thing” said Kinya. “what about your mom?”

Chapter 4 - The door, the key, and the food fight

“what took you so long?” asked Kinya as the four students headed to the cafeteria together. “There was a small problem in the sixth row. Someone dropped their lizard so I had to do a little dodging.” “oh.” Said Kinya. Emma opened the lunchroom doors. “Kinya you should be very happy.” She said as they got in the lunch line. “why?” Kinya asked. “because your first day of school is on a Monday. Monday is pizza lunch. The rest of the week is bag lunch.“ she dropped her pizza card into the bucket on the table. “two please” she said. After the 4 of them all had their pizza, milk, fruit and brownie they sat down at one of the tables. The cafeteria was nothing fancy, just 12 long brown lunch tables and benches. “so what pizza place is this from?” asked Kinya. “Penny’s Pizza: said Lesley. “it’s the best pizza place in Massachusetts!”” add Peter. “it’s the best pizza place in the world,” corrected Emma. Ms. Shooley walked over to their table. “Peter, Ms. Kamis needs to talk to you in the teacher’s room for a minute.” “okay, I guess.” He got up and left the lunch room. When he was out of sight, Kinya asked, “who’s Ms. Kamis?” “She’s the flying teacher,” said Lesley. “She’s really mean.” Emma added. They talked for a few more minutes, then Peter came back. He didn’t wait for a hello. “guys, I have something important to tell you. You know the second floor? Well, that’s where the teachers room is and there’s no halls there, it’s a bush maze. When I was near, the teacher’s room I saw a key on top of one of the bushes, and inside I saw this door. I asked Ms. Kamis about it but she said it was always locked.” “speaking of Ms. Kamis why did she want to talk to you anyways?” asked Kinya “she probably said he needs to work a little harder, you know, like his sister.” “YOU HAVE A SISTER!?” interrupted Peter. That got Emma mad. She threw some of her pineapple at him but he ducked and it hit a boy named Tommy instead. He threw part of (not all. Why sacrifice it?) his brownie. It hit Lesley on her glasses. “food fight!” someone shouted. Soon it was raining bits of pizza, pineapple, milk carton, outrageously tiny globs of brownie and who know what else. (not everyone took pizza lunch you know). Mrs. Anlis tried to make everyone stop but Ms. Shooley was different. She was known as “not Mrs. Anlis: she grabbed 5 grapes from someone with bag lunch and threw them across the room. Kinya’s conclusion to her teacher joining a food fight was: hey, why not? She picked up her half-pint milk carton and flung it across the room. It hit a girl named Abby on the back of her head. Abby threw her peanut butter sandwich back at Kinya. Just before it hit Kinya, Mrs. Anlis shouted “STOP!” All the food stopped suddenly in midair. ”everyone clear your tray off and put it away. Then line up for recess! Now. Do it now.” There was no movement in the room, except for Mrs. Anlis as she stomped out of the door. When she was gone, every piece of motionless food hanging in the air dropped to the ground. Everyone started moving again, piling up trays, lining up and stuffing bits of their unfinished brownies into their mouths. As Kinya got into line in between Emma and Peter, she whispered, “are you sure ms Kamis is the mean one, or is it really Mrs. Anlis?” “you haven’t met Ms. Kamis yet.” Said Emma.
Kinya thought about the woman she had met in the halls that morning. “I think I have,” she said. “I think I have.”

Chapter 3 - Close Call

Kinya motioned for Peter to duck. He looked confused for a second, but then he noticed Ms. Shooley. Quickly, he crawled under a desk in the first row. When no one was looking, he went the second row. Then the third. There 30 kids in the class, and the desks were arranged in ten rows of three. Peter’s desk, in between Kinya And Emma’s, was in the tenth row. While Kinya waited, she talked to Emma about the lizards. What was taking Peter so long? Finally, Ms. Shooley said “okay, I hope everyone fudgeificated their lizard at least once. I’m going to ask a question to see how much really know about this spell.” Lesley looked under her desk, then mouthed to Kinya, “he’s coming.”
“Here’s the question: what happens if you’re too excited when you cast fedgeificate?” Ms. Shooley asked. A few hands went up. Peter slipped into his chair just as Ms. Shooley looked in their direction. The problem was, he came up with his hand raised. Ms. Shooley called on him. ”um…. .” after all that happened in the last 15 minutes, he somehow didn’t know the answer. Kinya looked at him and mouthed “it’s a fudge world after all.” Peter smiled.
“the world turns into fudge.” He answered.
