Chapter 5 - At Emma’s House

After school, Emma, Kinya, Peter and Lesley went to the school library. There were only a few other kids inside. “come on Kinya, I’ll show you the spells section,” said Emma. “it should have some books on fudgeification.” They explored the shelves of the library until they had each decided on a few books. Kinya got two books: Guide to Fudgeification and it’s Uses and The Founder of the Fudge. Emma got two books about fudgeification and another one called Magical Objects. They all checked out their books then left the library.
“You’re pretty quiet Emma,” said Kinya. “yeah, I guess,” answered Emma.
When they got to the curb Emma said “do you want to come to my house tonight Kinya?” “sure, I guess. But I’ll have to tell my parents first.” “you can call them when we get there.”
“are you an all magic family?” Kinya asked suddenly.
Emma thought about it a bit as Peter and Lesley left them to go to their homes. Finally she answered. “I guess so.”
“well, then why would you have a phone?” “Kinya, you read Harry Potter too much.”
“what do you mean?”
“we live on Earth. We have a phone.”
“oh.” They walked for a few more minutes before arriving at Emma’s house. It was like any other house except for the fact that the jack-o-lantern on their front step was blinking. The two girls walked up to the front door. Emma pulled a ring of keys out of her coat pocket. On it were six keys and a smiley face keychain. “all the keys are useless,” she said. “but the keychain unlocks anything with a keyhole. My dad took the magic out of the actual keys. He used magic scissors.”
“keys are magical?” Kinya wondered out loud.
“of course they are. Only magic can unlock things,” she opened the door and they walked inside. “finally you’re here! Dad told me to watch you, but I have homework I would ask Katie to watch you but she’s going to Susie’s house again, so that means you and your friend are watching Will, Thessakanula and the triplets.” Kinya stared at the owner of the voice. She looked exactly like her! The only differences were that she was older and was wearing glasses. Both of them somehow managed to get their amazingly short black hair into a ponytail every morning.
“Kaylie, her name isn’t Thessakanula, it’s Thing.”
“So what? Dad calls her by her real name so why can’t I?”
“Because you’re not even a grownup!”
“Hah! You wish! I’m seventeen years old now so in your face!”
“Actually, you’re not really a grown up until you’re eighteen.” Kinya pointed out.
“Same difference! I’m only a few months away being an official adult.”
“Oh yeah, well—“ Emma started to say before a new voice cut in. “bye everyone, I’m going to susie’s house now!”
“Bye Katie” Emma said cheerfully as if the fight with Kaylie had never happened. Katie was barely ever in the house after school. But somehow she easily managed to finish all the homework she got as an eleven-year-old. When she was gone, five younger children ran into the room. Emma pointed each one out as they ran by. “that one’s name is Tom.” She pointed at a small four year old boy. “there’s Joun.” She pointed at Tom’s identical brother. “and that one’s Paul.” She finished by pointing at a boy who looked exactly the same as the other two. “at least, I think that’s the order. Oh, and that two year old pulling the wagon is Thing.”
“Thing isn’t her real name is it?” asked Kinya as Kaylie left the room. “Thing, nickname!” Thing said.” “Real name” she giggled. “Theassakoola!”
“yeah, dad and Kaylie are the only ones who call her Thessakanula.”
“OK so Mr. Nemrok and Kaylie don’t call her Thing” said Kinya. “what about your mom?”

Chapter 4 - The door, the key, and the food fight

“what took you so long?” asked Kinya as the four students headed to the cafeteria together. “There was a small problem in the sixth row. Someone dropped their lizard so I had to do a little dodging.” “oh.” Said Kinya. Emma opened the lunchroom doors. “Kinya you should be very happy.” She said as they got in the lunch line. “why?” Kinya asked. “because your first day of school is on a Monday. Monday is pizza lunch. The rest of the week is bag lunch.“ she dropped her pizza card into the bucket on the table. “two please” she said. After the 4 of them all had their pizza, milk, fruit and brownie they sat down at one of the tables. The cafeteria was nothing fancy, just 12 long brown lunch tables and benches. “so what pizza place is this from?” asked Kinya. “Penny’s Pizza: said Lesley. “it’s the best pizza place in Massachusetts!”” add Peter. “it’s the best pizza place in the world,” corrected Emma. Ms. Shooley walked over to their table. “Peter, Ms. Kamis needs to talk to you in the teacher’s room for a minute.” “okay, I guess.” He got up and left the lunch room. When he was out of sight, Kinya asked, “who’s Ms. Kamis?” “She’s the flying teacher,” said Lesley. “She’s really mean.” Emma added. They talked for a few more minutes, then Peter came back. He didn’t wait for a hello. “guys, I have something important to tell you. You know the second floor? Well, that’s where the teachers room is and there’s no halls there, it’s a bush maze. When I was near, the teacher’s room I saw a key on top of one of the bushes, and inside I saw this door. I asked Ms. Kamis about it but she said it was always locked.” “speaking of Ms. Kamis why did she want to talk to you anyways?” asked Kinya “she probably said he needs to work a little harder, you know, like his sister.” “YOU HAVE A SISTER!?” interrupted Peter. That got Emma mad. She threw some of her pineapple at him but he ducked and it hit a boy named Tommy instead. He threw part of (not all. Why sacrifice it?) his brownie. It hit Lesley on her glasses. “food fight!” someone shouted. Soon it was raining bits of pizza, pineapple, milk carton, outrageously tiny globs of brownie and who know what else. (not everyone took pizza lunch you know). Mrs. Anlis tried to make everyone stop but Ms. Shooley was different. She was known as “not Mrs. Anlis: she grabbed 5 grapes from someone with bag lunch and threw them across the room. Kinya’s conclusion to her teacher joining a food fight was: hey, why not? She picked up her half-pint milk carton and flung it across the room. It hit a girl named Abby on the back of her head. Abby threw her peanut butter sandwich back at Kinya. Just before it hit Kinya, Mrs. Anlis shouted “STOP!” All the food stopped suddenly in midair. ”everyone clear your tray off and put it away. Then line up for recess! Now. Do it now.” There was no movement in the room, except for Mrs. Anlis as she stomped out of the door. When she was gone, every piece of motionless food hanging in the air dropped to the ground. Everyone started moving again, piling up trays, lining up and stuffing bits of their unfinished brownies into their mouths. As Kinya got into line in between Emma and Peter, she whispered, “are you sure ms Kamis is the mean one, or is it really Mrs. Anlis?” “you haven’t met Ms. Kamis yet.” Said Emma.
Kinya thought about the woman she had met in the halls that morning. “I think I have,” she said. “I think I have.”

Chapter 3 - Close Call

Kinya motioned for Peter to duck. He looked confused for a second, but then he noticed Ms. Shooley. Quickly, he crawled under a desk in the first row. When no one was looking, he went the second row. Then the third. There 30 kids in the class, and the desks were arranged in ten rows of three. Peter’s desk, in between Kinya And Emma’s, was in the tenth row. While Kinya waited, she talked to Emma about the lizards. What was taking Peter so long? Finally, Ms. Shooley said “okay, I hope everyone fudgeificated their lizard at least once. I’m going to ask a question to see how much really know about this spell.” Lesley looked under her desk, then mouthed to Kinya, “he’s coming.”
“Here’s the question: what happens if you’re too excited when you cast fedgeificate?” Ms. Shooley asked. A few hands went up. Peter slipped into his chair just as Ms. Shooley looked in their direction. The problem was, he came up with his hand raised. Ms. Shooley called on him. ”um…. .” after all that happened in the last 15 minutes, he somehow didn’t know the answer. Kinya looked at him and mouthed “it’s a fudge world after all.” Peter smiled.
“the world turns into fudge.” He answered.

Chapter 2 - Hunting for Excitement

“What did you do?” Kinya spun around and came face to face with Lesley. A very, very angry Lesley. “What did you do?” she repeated.
“I’m – I’m not sure!” Kinya answered. At least she wasn’t the only thing that wasn’t fudge. But did the other survivor have to be Lesley?! No, it didn’t, and it wasn’t. “Hello!” Emma. “I really really really know that I’m positively sure that I know what happened!”
Then, a new voice. “I think you’ll have to wait Emma.” It was Peter. “Lesley seems a bit busy yelling at Kinya. He was right. “Me, you and them?!” she screamed. “Out of everything else in this room, it had to be us and those two things??” she pointed at Emma and Peter. That made Emma mad. And that’s when Kinya learned that you don’t want to make Emma mad. She too three steps, pushed Kinya gently out of the way. Now she stood face to face with Lesley in front of the window, ready for battle. “Who are you calling a thing?!!!” she shouted. “oh, I didn’t call anyone a thing, I called you and Peter things. With an ‘S’!” “oh yeah, haha. Real witty. Thin-such not thing-uh.” Growled Emma. “I wh ‘zup” she added as an afterthought. Lesley ignored that. “Well, whatever happened you’d better know hot to fix it.”
“What? Almighty Lesley is asking Emma for help? Oh, isn’t that cute.” Peter said sarcastically. Lesley glared. Wait. Weren’t you here when Ms. Shooley told us how to turn things back from fudge?” asked Emma. Lesley was about to answer when Kinya cut in. “Hold on, are you saying that Ms. Shooley taught you ho w to undo something before teaching you how to do it?” “Yep.” answered Emma.
“Why?”
“To test our memory of course” answered Lesley. Then she turned around to answer Emma’s question. “F.Y.I. Emma, I was sick the day that Ms. Shooley taught us the reversal spell.”
“So was I.” Peter said for some reason. Lesley kicked him. “Well if no one here knows it, I guess I’ll just have to tell you.” said Emma flatly. “Wait, what happened in the first place?” asked Kinya, sounding confused. (Which she was.) “You turned turned the world into fudge.” There was silence. Even though it was only two seconds of quiet, those two seconds seemed to last two years. “well how do we turn it back!” Peter yelled. “the spell is … defudgeificate!” there was an even shorter silence, broken by “oh my gosh, that spell is so complicated, I never would have guessed!” Lesley said sarcastically. Emma, not realizing Lesley’s sarcasm, said “Lesley, I actually though you were smart.” Lesley slapped herself on the forehead. While all that was happening, Kinya saw a problem with Emma’s un-made plan. “guys, I just realized something.” She said. “what?” the others said in unison.”well, even though we know the reversal spell, we also know that the whole world is solid fudge.”
“yeah, so?” asked Peter. “well, like I said, the whole world is fudge, so we’d have to defudgificate more than just this classroom. We’d have to go around the entire world and defudgeificate everything!”
“Kinya, Kinya, Kinya, Kinya. I would think someone as smart as you would have realized by now. You see, you asked how you could defudgeificate the world if you only do the spell once. You should be asking how you can fudgeificate the whole world if you only do the spell once you see.” (I really don’t know why Emma keeps saying that.) “you were over-excited, and over-excitement makes spells work a bit too well. But all that means is that one of us has to be over-excited when we say defudgeificate, and BING! The world is back to normal.” Everyone was quiet. “Well, what are we waiting for?!” shouted Peter. “Let’s get excited!”
“We can’t get excited just like that.” said Lesley. “we need something to be excited about.” “fine then little Ms. Smarty-pants, we’ll do it your way. Everyone, find some excitement!” the four of them split up around the room. Kinya looked around the desk area, which took up most of the classroom. Emma searched the coat hall, Lesley went to the reading area, and Peter chose Ms. Shooley’s desk. Excitement was hard to find. Kinya peeked inside her classmates’ desks. Nope. No excitement. But she did notice that most of the kids had little erasers, strings, rubber bands, and those squishy things that you put on pencils inside their desks. Now, to Emma. She looked in everyones’ coat pockets and found a lot of candy wrappers, rocks, and squishys (the squishy things you put on pencils). All Lesley found was books made out of solid fudge. But now, the important part: Peter , as he found a sheet of paper. It said that Ms. Shooley’s class had extra recess that day. To Peter , if that wasn’t excitement, than excitement didn’t exist. Emma, Kinya, and Lesley saw as he started jumping up and down. They all stopped what they were doing and ran quickly to their desks. Peter, filled with joy, didn’t notice the sudden movement in the classroom. Extra recess! He thought. What should I do? Then Peter remembered about the fudge. So what? Fudge tastes good. Why is it so bad that the world is made out of it?
While he makes that highly important decision, I’ll explain why the three girls went back to these desks. When the world was back to normal, anyone who had been fudgeificated wouldn’t know that any time had passed. so if they were sitting before the fudge thing and standing afterwards (and in a different place too) then people would get confused. Anyways, back to Peter .
Hmmm. Well, during extra recess, maybe I should play soccer. .. oh! And hopscotch. Wait. He realized suddenly. We can’t even have normal recess if the world is made of fudge! Right before the excitement wore off he shouted “defudgeificate!” Boom! Suddenly everything was back to normal. People finished their sentences. No one noticed Peter kneeling next to Ms. Shooley but in a second some one would. That some one was Ms. Shooley.

Chapter 1 - A Fudge World

Oh great. Thought Kinya as she jumped over a puddle. I live two blocks away from school and I’m still going to be late! She was going to a school called the school of magic. Mrs. Anlis, one of the teacher at the school had told Kinya that anyone could do magic that tried. “I hope you’re right” Kinya had answered. She was the new girl and was already getting nervous as she hurried through the empty hallway. She was going so fast she didn’t see the woman walking in front of her., when she noticed her it was too late. “No running in the halls.” Said the woman.
“Sorry, but I really need to hurry or I’ll be late.” Said Kinya.
“Well, then get to class!”
“Right, sorry.” Said Kinya. She knew the woman was watching her. Ms. Shooley and Mrs. Aslis were the two homeroom teachers. School of magic was exactly like a normal school except for what they learned. Kinya didn’t know exactly what they learned but she knew it was something strange. She hurried past the doors of classrooms until she got to the one she was looking for. A small piece of paper was stuck to the door. Ms. Shooley’s name was written on it. “Here I go.” said Kinya to no one. She pushed open the door and walked in. the first thing she did was look at her watch. It was 9:30. Oh no, school starts at 9:00. I am so late! She thought. “I’m sorry that I’m late.” she said, trying her best to sound scared. “it’s your first day so it’s okay, but just this time.” “Okay.” Said Kinya. She looked around the room. There was a bookcase in one corner of the room with spellbooks in it. On one wall there were hooks with backpacks hanging on them. On the other side of the room was one big long table that took up all of the wall except the corner with the bookshelves. On the table there were things like globes, paper and a box filled with … something I wonder what’s in that box. Thought Kinya. at the back of the room there was a sign on the wall that had the words The magic of art written on it. The wall also had pictures taped on it that the kids in the class had drawn. At the front of the room was Ms. Shooley’s desk and in the middle of the room were the student’s desks. “Class I would like you to meet Kinya. She is the new girl and I hope she likes this class said Ms. Shooley. Kinya walked to her desk, happy then everyone stopped looking at her like she would do something amazing. She had never liked being the center of attention and she never would. Kinya sat down at her desk between a girl named Emma and a boy named Peter. Peter had short brown hair and Emma had blond hairthat came down to her shoulders. The girl in front of Kinya had brown hair that was about as long as Emma’s. she was wearing glasses.
“This week we are working on simple spells.” Said Ms. Shooley. “the first spell we’re going to learn is the most simple spell ever. I mean it, there is not any existing spell that is easier than this. But this spell is also one of the to five most powerful spells.”
“if you’re going to tell us the spell please do it now.” Said Peter.
Ms. Shooley looked like she hadn’t heard him. Peter sighed and raised his hand. “what is it Peter??”
“oh it’s nothing. I was just wondering when we’re going to learn the spell?”
“after I’m done telling you about it. This spell will turn anything into solid fudge. You can eat the fudge and it will reappear and still be fudge. It will not be able to move anymore. It will also be a lot less heavy so you can carry it around easily. The only thing you need to remember is to point down. The spell will hit the floor and bounce to hit your target. Any questions?” Emma raised her hand. “Yes Emma”
“well, all the stuff you told us is really nice and everything, but I still want to know what you say to make the spell work.”
“oh. Right, you say ‘fudgeificate!’ now no more questions? Good! Lesley, can you please pass out the lizards?”
“Okay.” Said the girl with glasses that was sitting in front of Kinya. She got up and walked to the table by the wall, picked up the box on it, and started to pass out whatever the things in it were. Kinya leaned her head to the left to see what Lesley was giving to some of the boys in the first row. She thought it looked a little like a rock. Then it started climbing up his arm. Wait. She thought, rocks aren’t supposed to move.
“Emma,” Kinya said,
“how did you know my name?” Emma interrupted. Kinya pointed to the nametag on her desk. “oh, right, sometimes I forget that it’s there.”
“what’s Lesley handing out?”
“lizards. We always use them for practicing spells.”
“what are you two talking about?” said a new voice.
“none of your business Lesley.” Emma said. “I thought you were passing out lizards, not listening to other people’s conversations.” Lesley gave them their lizards and glared. Emma stuck out her tongue as she walked away. Kinya after Lesley until Emma said “Kinya, your lizard is going to run right off the desk.” Kinya snatched up her lizard just before he fell off the desk and then put him back down in the middle of the desk. But right when his little gray feet touched the ground he scampered toward the edge of the desk again. Kinya grabbed him by the tail just in time.
The boy named Peter, who sat to the left of Kinya, said “You’re supposed to name it, you know.”
“Oh, right.” Said Emma. “I forgot about that.” She picked up her pencil and whispered “Althia.” Kinya, who had been staring at the pencil didn’t think the spell had done anything. “What did you do?”
“It’s a basic spell. Makes the pencil be able to write on anything.” She pulled Kinya’s lizard toward her. “What’s its name?”
Kinya thought for a moment and then said “Kink. I’ll name him Kink.” Emma wrote something on the red triangular spot on the lizard’s forehead that every lizard have on there otherwise all gray bodies. When Emma handed Kink back to Kinya she saw:
Kink
Kinya

written on the red spot in untidy handwriting. This confirmed to Kinya that the school she was at was different from any other, not only because they learned magic, but also because it was so loud. At every other school Kinya had gone to you had to be quiet while people were working. But here it seemed like people thought you ‘d be punished for being silent. Kinya, Emma said “I just want to know one thi- wait, no, I want toknow a few things. Thing number one: why in the world were you so late for school?!” Kinya leaned back away from Emma. Did she really have to shout?
“so late in the school year or day?”
“both, I guess.” Emma answered cheerfully. There was nothing in her voice that would make you think that she had just screamed her head off. “Uh, well, I was late today ‘cause me and my family were unpacking and – “
“Why?”
“What?”
“Why why were you unpacking.” It was a question . but the way Emma said it, it didn’t sound like one.
“because we just moved here.” Kinya answered slowly. “and it’s also why I’m late in the school year. Because me and my family just moved here.”
“Okay. Now thing number two: why did you and your family move?”
“Um. Well you well you probably won’t believe me, but me and my family move a lot because – oh you won’t believe me – but the reason is – is that every house we move to is invaded by ants!” she finished quickly. “Okey-dokey, fine, now the moment we’ve all been waiting for, thing number three!” Emma continued. She didn’t seem at all surprised about the ants. “Do you like blueberry muffins?”
“Yeah,” said Kinya slowly “Why?”
“Cause I couldn’t think of anything else for thing number three. Anyways …” she looked at Kinya. “well, come on, ask a question, I like this game!”
“well, uh o okay, if you say so. What did I miss? When I came in you were just about to start your lesson. What were you doing?”
“in the future please number your questions thing number one, thing number two and so on” said Emma, making her voice sound like a flight attendant’s. “Oh, and, ONE AT A TIME PLEASE!” shouting again. Kinya just couldn’t understand it. “OK, but I just really want to know –“
“yeah, yeah I heard you the first time. Every Monday for a half hour before school starts we get to do what ever we want. For example, Lesley was reading, Peter was drawing and I was screaming.” Okay, Kinya thought, so you scream before school and during school.
“hey Frank!” Emma called. “I got you that muffin you wan-oh, oops, no. I ate it. Sorry! I have a lot to learn, Kinya finished her thought with a sigh. Thing number two.she said. Emma turned her attention back to her immediately. “Why was everyone looking at me earlier?”
Emma’s eyes widened. “You don’t know?” she whispered (which is weird, since she was usually shouting)
“don’t know what?” said Kinya. She was starting to feel curious.
“you broke a record.” Answered Emma back to her usual shouty voice.
“W-what?” asked Kinya.
“You broke a record.” Emma repeated impatiently. “You’re the latest to school since September first. The last record was five minutes. Kinya, they were looking at you because they were excited!” not the answer Kinya expected. It was a better answer than she expected. More confident than before (no idea why) Kinya was ready. She pointed ate the desk about a foot away from Kink. “Fudgeificate!” she said. A little read ball came out of her finger, hit the desk and bounded. It hit Kink just before he fell off the desk. And he didn’t fall off. Because he was now made entirely out of fudge. The problem was, so was the desk. And the floor. And the other desks, of course, Kinya noticed this. And of course, she felt like she had to do something. Kinya jumped up and ran to the bookshelf. There had to be something about fudge. Nope. No book on fudge. Kinya jumped up again and ran toward the windows. No time to lose. It can’t be outside too! She thought. Finally, she was at the window. Kinya opened the shades, but closed her eyes when she would be able to see outside. She couldn’t she didn’t want to see. But she had to. Kinya opened one eye and peered out the window. There used to be gray rain clouds outside. Now there were brown rain clouds. Brown, because they were fudge. Fudge, just like ther rest of Massachusetts. Just like the rest of the world.
